Message of Chairman

Maria Rosario Ramirez-Eala

Last July, after 21 years of dedicated, selfless and able leadership, Dr. Corlu Caparas turned over the chairmanship of the PBPD to Dr. Marirose Eala. It is with gratitude that we look back at the accomplishments of the board under the guidance of Dr. Caparas (and I quote from her address):
1. a tried and tested certification process
2. a completed grandfathering period that has produced 2 successful specialists
3. a graduate accreditation program that is in place and
4. a college of diplomates composed of specialists who have gained wisdom from experience and is revitalized with new members.
As we begin the 22nd year of the PBPD it is also important to reflect on where we are and in what direction we are headed. Since board certification is one of the main missions of the board it is important to take advantage of all opportunities for continued improvement of the certification process working towards continuous testing of the validity and reliability of the process.

The purpose of the certification process is to certify an individual as competent to practice their specialty. We challenge program directors to produce graduates who can challenge the PBPD examination process with successful outcomes. I am pleased to share that 7 specialists are in various stages in the diplomate certification process.

We hope to increase public awareness and public demand and confidence in board certification so that the public equates the term 'board certified" or "diplomate" with the highest level of expertise in the specialty. Board certification plays a vital role in professional self-regulation. The Board's involvement in assessing whether professional standards are met, is crucial.

A strong foundation for the PBPD has been set. It is with enthusiasm and excitement that I look forward to continue working with the dynamic members of the board and the specialty as we continue to align the values of excellence in pediatric oral health care and lifelong learning.
