Functions of the PAC

The PAC, headed by a chairperson, shall work as a team to perform the following tasks:

  • To establish the specialty-specific standards by which its members will evaluate advanced Pediatric Dental programs for accreditation purposes.
  • To accredit institutions with Pediatric Dentistry training and service according to the program standards set by the PAC.
  • To determine a program’s accreditation status.
  • To adjudicate appeals of adverse decisions and to establish policies and procedures for appeal.

Steps for Program Accreditation

  • Self-evaluation of the Program

The submission of the requirements of the Program Accreditation Packet (includes the Program Accreditation Application form, the Self-assessment tool, the compilation of the required appendices and the Chairman’s report) analyzes the institution’s educational resources and capabilities in delivering effective training. All submissions will be used as a reference by the PAC for the official site visit.

  • Accreditation Site Visit

The primary task of the PAC accrediting team is to verify claims and statements in the self-assessment report.

  • Evaluation by the Program Accreditation Committee

The PAC accrediting team submits the formal assessment and summary report of the accreditation visit to the PAC Chairman, who in turn, reviews the report and makes a formal decision.
Areas to be evaluated:

  • Institutional Commitment/Program Effectiveness/Affiliations
  • Program Director and Teaching Staff
  • Facilities and Resources
  • Curriculum and Program Duration
  • Advanced Education Students/Residents
  • Research

Levels of Accreditation

Training programs should achieve the THRESHOLD LEVEL OF COMPLIANCE (TLC) in all areas to be evaluated.

  • Failed Accreditation
  • Level I Accreditation: Probationary Accreditation
  • Level II Accreditation with reporting requirements
  • Level III Accreditation without reporting requirements

Graduates of non-accredited programs will not be recognized as a specialist by the PPDSI and PBPD until credentials are verified. Some graduates may need to undergo additional training, if needed to satisfy deficient aspects of the approved training program.
